We love democracy, but few of us can explain why. That maybe the reason some autocrats pose as true democrats, and thesubdued can see dictatorship as the answer to their prayers. But agovernment “of the people, by the people” does not always makesound decisions “for the people”. It is contentious and unfair, andit cannot magically solve all the world’s problems – but it doeskeep tyrants at bay. Luckily, Svend-Erik Skaaning, democracyscholar at Aarhus University, is not afraid to speak up: We lovedemocracy because it is less flawed than all other forms of rule.
